Acrylic Knife Block

I love this project for several reasons. First, my old knife block sits on the counter taking gobs of space while harboring who knows what kind of bacteria and germs in those dark slots in the wood.  Secondly, I’m never quite sure what knife I’m grabbing and usually have to go a couple of rounds before I get it right.  And lastly, I saw something like this for sale for a few hundred dollars....and you know that gets my goat. So, here’s my super modern and super inexpensive acrylic knife block  that lets you see exactly what’s going on!

MATERIALS:

Cutting board

1/4” Acrylic cut to the same size as the board

1/2” Washers

Screws

Drill

Screwdriver

Masking tape

STEPS:

Put a piece of masking tape on the front of the acrylic at each corner.  This will keep the boy from slipping and protect your acrylic if it does. Mark 1/2” in and down from the corner. Drill a hole slightly bigger than your screw.  When drilling the key is to go slow. The heat is what eases the bit through and extra pressure is just going to crack your sheet. Repeat on all four corners.

Stack three washers and do a quick doubles check that the stack is slightly wider than your thickest knife.

Slip an additional washer onto your screw (this washer will hide any imperfections in your drilling).

Gently screw the washered screw through the acrylic, the three washers, and into the cutting board.

The acrylic sandwich should look like this...
