Glitter Meets Mother Nature
I've just recently hopped on the glitter train. Historically I've not been a big fan of the substance, that's until I found just how to work with it to add a little subtle (or not so subtle) glam to everyday items. For my Thanksgiving centerpiece I like combining the very rustic quality of dried lotus, bell cup, okra and mushroom pieces with the shimmering quality of the glitter. There are a couple of keys to doing this successfully:1. Use glitter that mimic the same colors as in the dried pieces - copper, gold, moss green, brown2. Mix glittered pieces and non-glittered pieces to keep the arrangement grounded.3. Mix and match the glitter to create layers of color. The method of glittering couldn't be simpler. Grab your materials:Natural elements: you can use acorns, pine cones, lotus, eucalyptus, okra, mushrooms, jacaranda pods - the list can go on an on.Glitter - you can get an amazing variety at the craft stores these days - again, choose natural accruing colors.Glue - I used Mod Podge to brush on to smaller areas and spray glue for wider coverage Get your glitter on:Working one piece at a time, add your adhesive. With the acorns I brushed on Mod Podge. I did the same with the tops of the lotus pods - with these I did some with the glitter just in the holes and some with it around the edges. For the leaves, okra, sponge mushroom and jacaranda pods I used a good coat of spray glue.Add your glitter. Put down a piece of paper to catch your extra glitter and have at it! I had all of my natural materials ready to go and then worked color by color. I started with the copper and did a group of acorns, leaves, and pods in this color - set them to dry. Put all the split glitter back in the bottle and then moved on to gold, etc. Once you've got all your pieces, there's so much you can do with them. Just a bowl of glittered acorns set on an entry table can add a lot of fall glam. They can also be made into napkin rings (just give the finished pieces a coat of spray polyurethane so the glitter does fall on peoples napkins!). And of course centerpieces! I'll post a video of how I did mine later. Happy Glittering!
