Toddler Painted T-Shirts

Who needs ugly ties when you can make these t-shirts for Dad?!  Easily made with an old t-shirt, some craft paint and stick on letters.  You can crank some out tomorrow!

MATERIALS

T-shirt

Stick on letters

Masking Tape

Paper bag or piece of cardboard

Paint (Fabric paint if you're picky, but I used regular paint)

Paintbrushes

STEPS

Slip the paper bag or piece of cardboard inside the shirt.  This will keep paint from seeping through to the back.  Decide on your message and stick down letters.  Make sure to press down firmly.  It's always good to have a pre-schooler help (side note - great time for a spelling lesson).

Use masking tape to create a boarder about the letters.

I have messy kids and didn't want to risk paint getting on the rest of the shirt.  I used several rows of tape and folded the shirt underneath so none of it would be exposed except what was to be painted.

Then I let my kids loose!  Well....almost.  My 5 year old, Coco, and I decided what colors we wanted on each shirt - it was a good lesson in color coordination.  Blues and greens on the DAD shirt, silver, grey and glitter paint on the LOVE shirt and bright warm colors on the PAPA shirt.  This way you at least have a color story.

Make sure they get good coverage on the letters and the edges to your word can be read and the boarder shows up.  If some t-shirt is left unpainted in the center it's fine.  Let the paint dry and then carefully peel off the tape and the letters.
