Santa's Delivery Crate
This is so simple, yet fills so many needs around the holidays - that empty corner of the family room, the landing, the kids room, the year you don't want to have a Christmas tree or you need extra space to stash gifts....and let's just face it, it's cute. Hats off to Amy from www.IdeaRoom.net who inspired me to create this.
MATERIALS
Crate (I made mine (click here) but you can pick them up at craft stores, an old trunk would work just as well
Letters (mine are wood, but decals would work too, you could even stencil)
Burlap
3 Globe light covers (I got mine at Lowes for about $5.00)
3 strings of 50 lights
Pine boughs (I got mine for free from the clippings pile at the Christmas tree lot)
Power strip
Extension cord
Glue gun

Drill a hole in the back of your crate if there's no place to slip an extension cord. Put your extension cord inside, run the plug out through the hole and plug into your power strip.

Use hot glue to attach your letters to the front of the box.

Unless you've got zillions of presents to fill the crate (and if so, good on ya!), place a cardboard box in the crate to take up some of the volume. Pull your extension cord up and out of the way so that you have access to it.

Layer your burlap over the cardboard box letting some of it drape over the edges.

Layer your pine boughs on top. I went back in later and added some artificial branches of red ilex berries just to add a little color.

Now prep your globes by taking a string of lights and inserting it inside. You can just stick the bundle in straight out of the box, just pull a little of the string out so it can reach your extension cord.

Nestle the globes here and there in your crate and plug into the extension cord. Take the part of the light string that you pulled out and weave it through a few branches on the way to be plugged in to add a little extra twinkle.
Now add your packages on top. If you're like me (and I totally blame my mother for this and she would agree), wrap them all in matching Santa-deliveryesque paper. I chose brown butcher paper, red ribbon and twine....'cause that's what Santa would do!
