Create Your Own Window Decals
There are plenty of time when a great window doesn't have a great view. Maybe the window was installed decades before the building next door went up 3 feet away. Perhaps it's the window in the bathroom that looks into the neighbors yard. Perhaps you just have a beautiful window frame you picked up at a garage sale and want to create a little bit of art.Well, creating these DIY window decals could be your answer! They let in the light (they're translucent), but block the view. It's really a very simple process. Start with a favorite photo. Maybe the sunset from your last vacation or that great barn you snapped a photo of when you went for the country drive on Saturday or maybe your kids playing in the backyard. All you need to make sure of is that it's high resolution. If you're good with the photo software on your computer, just crop the photo to be the same proportions as your window. If you're not very good at that, ask the people at the print shop to do it. Bring your photo file to your neighborhood printer (I used Kinkos for these), and ask them to print a clear vinyl window decal for attaching to the inside of the window. It should cost around $10 a square foot. They'll do the rest!
Then all you need to do is bring home the big print, peel off the back, add stick it to the window. If you've got a window that's divided into panes, just measure the size of the panes, trace it out on the back of the decal, cut the decal into squares, and attach the squares separately. It's that easy. When you're tired of it, just peel it off.
