Whites and Neutrals for Fall
Don’t get me wrong, I love orange…like really love….like 2 orange sofas in our house love…but I sometimes do tire of it during the fall. So, I thought I’d give you the option of something completely different…..white. I’ve always loved white Cinderella pumpkins, so I designed an entire porch around them! Pulling in whites, neutrals and greens it creates a sophisticated display that works wonderfully for fall all the way into Thanksgiving.
One of the keys here is having an array of botanicals in a coordinated neutral palate, but that also have rich textural differences. I chose the aforementioned white pumpkins, but also wheat sheaths, branches of cotton, corn stalks, and so on.
For the containers I went around the house and garage and gathered all the wicker, raw wood and galvanized metal that I could find. The big wicker basket - yup, that’s a laundry hamper. Don’t be afraid to use indoor items outdoors, it creates warmth and charm. To weave the items together, I took a wide piece of burlap and wound them through the pieces.
Also, don’t forget to add some live greenery to the dried items, it adds a much needed lift. I chose decorative winter cabbage and nestled them under a bench in a galvanized planter - they can eventually move to the garden.
And then I added some fresh moss and nestled it into a wood carryall - adding some freshness and a touch of whimsy.
So….don’t hate me orange, I still love you. But every now and then I do enjoy a break.
