Key to My Heart
I needed a quick and easy little keepsake for my Valentine’s Day table and came up with these little place cards that I could whip together from things I already had around the house. They serve double duty as you can write each guests name or a special message on them and they are the perfect little thing for people to take home with them at the end of the night.
Start with a small block of wood. You can get these ready made at the craft store or, do what I did, and just cut down a piece of scrap wood, even a 2×4 will do.
Drill two holes (I think I used a 1/4′ bit) slightly off center about a half inch from each other.
Give each block a base coat of chalkboard paint – if you don’t have chalkboard paint, use any paint, you just loose the write-on, wipe-off ability. Even a wood stain would be nice. Once that’s dry, go back and hand paint a red heart on each one. I then took a yarn needle and some red yarn and just threaded it through the two holes. Take a key (I had gotten these from the craft store, but even a modern key would work – good use for all those random keys you’re holding on to and have no idea what they’re for!) and tie the yarn around it. Done!
Happy Valentine’s Day
