Backyard Scrabble

IMG_6851

I must say, we’re a little obsessed with Scrabble these. On boards, on our phones….so why not in our yard? With outdoor fun just around the corner, this outdoor set will make for hours of family fun as well as good lessons in spelling for the younger set.

MATERIALS
6” x 6” craft wood squares (if you’re a purest, you’ll need 100, but 40 or 50 will do)
5” adhesive letters
1” adhesive numbers
Polyurethane
1” x 3” x 12” boards – 8 pieces
Rope

STEPS
Okay, this is ridiculously easy. Un-peel the letters and stick them to the wood squares. Un-peel the numbers and stick them to the lower right hand corner of the square. If you want to be all official:

A E I O U L N S T R – 1 point
D G – 2 points
B C M P – 3 points
F H V W Y – 4 points
K – 5 points
J X – 8 points
Q Z – 10 points

And the distribution:
1 tile each – K Q Z
2 tiles each – B C M P F H V W Y
3 tiles each – G
4 tiles each – L S U D
6 tiles each – N R T
8 tiles each – O J X
9 tiles each – A I
12 tiles each – E

Once they’re all in place, give them a coat of polyurethane on the front and the back so they’ll withstand the weather.

For the stand, cut one end of the boards into a point. Drill a hole into the other end big enough to fit the rope. Cut the rope into 4 pieces around 5 feet long. Pass the rope through the hole in to boards and tie a knot at each end.
