I love how dramatic this lantern is – the nice glow that comes from the windows and the drama it creates in the room. Here’s the how to:
Small string of white mini-lights
Glitter (of course!)
Take your box and draw out your doors and windows. Don’t freak out – they’re just rectangles and squares – one in the center and a pair or two over to the sides.
Cut them out using the utility knife. You can get fancy and create panes by cutting four smaller squares within the larger one, or make shutters or doors by cutting the top and bottom and center, but leaving the sides in tact. Cut a small hole in the back of the house where your cord can come through.
Make your roof peaks by cutting the side flaps into triangles.
Then crease the top flap to fold over it. Cut the poster board so it’s slightly larger than the box top. Bend it down the middle so it can sit on top as a roof. Don’t glue your roof to the house, you’ll need house access later.
To create the dormer, cut another piece of poster board into a long triangle, bend it in half and glue it in place. (This is trial and error until you get the right shape, just keep trimming it and re-trying until you get the right fit.) Now, cut another triangle that will fit within the dormer and glue it in place.
Paint your house (I chose white) and your roof (I chose silver). Once dry, working one side at a time, give it a good spraying of spray glue and then sprinkle glitter all over. Shake of the excess and repeat on the next wall and then the roof.
Tape wax paper on the inside of the box over all of the window and door openings. Lay mini-lights inside the house and run the cord out through the pre-cut hole. Plug in and invite the snow village neighbors over for cocoa..or Michele Lee and Joan Van Arc if they’re in town.
